Greetings, I am learning Japanese. But, a few reasons why it's possible for me:
1. I don't add new characters all the time. In fact, at this point, I basically know all of the kanji that are in common use, so I'm only adding in new words, phrases, grammatical patterents, etc., not new symbols. 2. I only test recognition, not my ability to write/produce the kanji. For my goals, I don't need that, and it saves a lot of time since I don't have to do so. 3. I should also make clear that it takes 2 hours for me just to do the repetitions for the day. To add 100 new cards takes a few more hours, but that's because I'm studying independently of Mnemosyne during that time and then only ocassionally adding a card when I decide there's something I ought to remember. Of course, the beauty of Mnemosyne is that you can go at whatever pace you'd like and you'll be able to make progress. And it all depends on your cards-- if you're going for full recall of the characters, obviously that takes far more time than me. All I'm asking myself is "Can I read it?" As an aside, I do have 1000 cards in a separate category in the deck where I test my writing ability. I always use "activate categories" to do this category first every day. This is similar to your method, where I simply write the words and then rewrite the incorrect ones several times in a notebook.
