Very true - I've played in bands and heard all the excuses for not being
paid for a gig.
What I was asking in my own convuluted way was, if the recorded medium was
slightly less dominated by executives - and it was cheaper to put out an
album via the net, would that mean bands could have more control over their
material, and that they could cut out the middleman (ie - someone in a
suit).
The net could be viewed then as the new independant record label, only if
there was a way of sending the income(credit card payments) to the musicians
- who would ideally be in charge.
It wouldn't be half as much fun as browsing in a record shop tho!
