Well, I’ve now been working on this issue for sometime and I am truly stumped.

We did turn up monitoring and logging. We also set the server to forward all mail to a smart host (one of our Modus Mail servers).

On Friday I managed to send over 100,000 emails through the system (some to a hotmail account and some to my own account).

However, come this morning there were several message in the queue yet again. What I have found is the local generated Admin messages (the performance and usage reports) which are about 70Kb each seem to start the queue. However once these are flushed other messages will stay in the. It’s a bit confusing because some messages will get delivered from the remaining ones whilst others will stay. The only common thing that I can see is that no DATA is sent from the SBS server to the Modus server, all other commands are issued normally.

I’ll try and capture some more log information and post here.

OK, good.

Have you tried turning up monitoring and logging on their server to show what it says?

You can email me the screen shot privately if you want.

The settings are set as per the details below. With the exception that 4 DNS servers have been manually listed (this was done to try and alleviate the problems experienced).

They are currently set to use their Internal SBS DNS, however as far as the other machines on the Net go they use different DNS and the zone is hosted separately. This should not be an issue as remote workers would connect to their server via the VPN connection and there is a DNS entry for this. Also, the DNS entries both forward and reverse are correctly set-up as our ModusMail OPR log shows:

---- SMTPRS log entry made at 01/13/2004 13:04:29

Incoming SMTP call from 212.58.150.133 at 10:59:26.

The address 212.58.150.133 is found in the Reverse DNS Cache.

Reverse DNS Lookup for sbs.grierolubi.co.uk completed at 10:59:26.

Address 212.58.150.133 resolves to sbs.grierolubi.co.uk.

>>> EHLO sbs.grierolubi.co.uk

<<< 250-mail-gw1.inctech.com

The weird issues is that we see emails from them however, sometimes there are long delays. What puzzles me is that if you send an email to an address then that will sit in the queue, a subsequent email to the same address will get delivered in a matter of seconds and the original first message will continue to sit in the queue.
