Hi Ian, Welcome on board. I had the same symptoms in my 1988 4/4 back in the mid-90's It took months to figure out what the problem was. It turned out to be the fuel tank: it had corroded through from where it was sitting on, and fretting against, the wooden supporting boards. I found out by disconnecting the filler and hose and peering inside the tank with a torch. This revealed a rusty spot on the bottom of the tank. Eventually the leak became bad enough to manifest itself as a slight dampness of the boards, but it never did leak fast enough to leave a puddle or even a damp spot on the garage floor. It always evaporated and left a nasty smell, which found its way into our adjoining house. I had a new tank fitted and lashings of Waxoyl applied to the boards and tank prior to installation. So far so good.
There are other things it could be - corroded or perished fuel lines are quite likely. Regards, Owen. ----- Original Message ----- From: Ian Wilson To: mogtalk2 Sent: Sunday, June 10, 2012 6:42 PM Subject: [mogtalk2] Petrol fumes Plus 4 New to this group so apologies if I transgress! My 2007 Plus4 has been producing strong petrol-smelling fumes. Took to dealer who checked fuel lines, tank etc. Underneath of chassis dry and nothing seen on ground under car each day. Any suggestions as to cause please? Thanks in advance Ian ------------------------------------------- View posts on The Mail Archive http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ [http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/] Modify Your Subscription: https://www.listbox.com/member/?member_id=22459785&id_secret=22459785-4a39ddf8 Powered by Listbox: http://www.listbox.com
