Bit of a time ago, but chances that Owen's leak was really caused by the tank being lose on the boards. Fuel tanks are supposed to be tight and immobile on the boards. Additionally, the mild steel tanks are really made from tern plate - lead coated mild steel so in the ordinary way of things, ought not rust. I too had a big leak, but the offending tank is now in my shed as I might fix it some day as mine was probably holed by a stone. Tank replacement though is a horrid job. Not too bad in a working garage with a four post lift but I did mine at home with an assortment of jacks and axle stands. If you do it - plan the activity very carefully. Hopefully your tank is fine. Of the suggestions so far, the filler hose is a very likely culprit and this and all the tank top joints are easily looked at.
And you certainly want to find this one. rgds Martyn From: John H. Take Owens advice and make sure yours isn't the same. Salute, John H. Sheally II On Jun 10, 2012, at 3:24 PM, Owen Jenkins wrote: Hi Ian, Welcome on board. I had the same symptoms in my 1988 4/4 back in the mid-90's It took months to figure out what the problem was. It turned out to be the fuel tank: it had corroded through from where it was sitting on, and fretting against, the wooden supporting boards. I found out by disconnecting the filler and hose and peering inside the tank with a torch. This revealed a rusty spot on the bottom of the tank. Eventually the leak became bad enough to manifest itself as a slight dampness of the boards, but it never did leak fast enough to leave a puddle or even a damp spot on the garage floor. It always evaporated and left a nasty smell, which found its way into our adjoining house. I had a new tank fitted and lashings of Waxoyl applied to the boards and tank prior to installation. So far so good. There are other things it could be - corroded or perished fuel lines are quite likely.
