My 2007 4/4 had petrol smells from the tank. Take off spare wheel and
remove/unbolt and pull forward the wheel mounting plate. Tighten the clips
on the rubber hose from the filler neck and at the other end on top of the
tank, making sure the pipe at the filler end is also fully screwed in to
the neck of the filler pipe. Mine were all loose/not screwed in. In fact
the clips were upside down and could not be tightened until removed and
turned over. Solved my problem, as your is a similar age it could be this
fault.
