Hi Terry

It really depends on what you are looking for - a "classic" car - i.e.25yrs and
older or something more modern. I have an '87 4/4 with the Ford cvh 1600 - I
love it to bits and have had it from new. If I hadn't got an emotional
attachment to it, I would have upgraded it at regular intervals. I personally
like the V6 powered cars - I don't see much advantage in the 2 litre cars over
the cvh / zetec ones (especially with a bit of tuning).

If you're looking at an older car, the later cvh engined ones (on carbs) are
good. They have 5 speed boxes, cuprinol treated wood, often a treated chassis
and they feel "modern". As with many others, I have made suspension upgrades
(away from the lever arms) and this improves the ride and the handling. The
engine can also benefit from mild tuning - an extra 20 bhp is reasonably easy
to achieve and transforms the car.

My advice is to take your time, ask a lot of questions and above all, when you
think you've found one, take someone with you who knows what to look for -
there are good cars, some very good cars out there, but there are also some
that will eat your wallet!
