Since this is your first, I would wait until the technology war dust settles before you buy a Blue Ray. It's got superior technology but so did the Betamax. If it loses the technology war, you'll be left with a lot of expensive Blue Ray discs and a system that is eventually phased out. Since you primarily plan to record off cablecast, you might want to think of buying a cheap DVD recorder for now and hold off on that expensive equipment purchase for a few years.
