Exactly, Doug, and that's why they allow licensing of the format
unlike the proprietary ownership they held with the Betamax format.
No one made Betamax but Sony. VHS was inferior to Betamax but
available for any manufacturer to make.
Ipods from Apple are a glaring exception...for every rule, there is
an exception...or two.

If I remember correctly, a few days ago (or perhaps it was last
week), Toshiba threw in the gloves and declared they would no
longer pursue their HD DVD platform. This in essence yielded the
crown to SONY's Blu-Ray technology. A quick news search should
reveal background. Check

Since this is your first, I would wait until the technology war
dust settles before you buy a Blue Ray. It’s got superior
technology but so did the Betamax. If it loses the technology war,
you’ll be left with a lot of expensive Blue Ray discs and a system
that is eventually phased out. Since you primarily plan to record
off cablecast, you might want to think of buying a cheap DVD
recorder for now and hold off on that expensive equipment purchase
for a few years. FRANC

i want to buy a DVD recorder. my first.
they are cheaper than 100.00 BUT the Blue Ray technology is closer
to 700.00
since i would be recording primarily the classics of the 40s and
50s off TMC channel etc...... is the extra blue technology worth
it????
of course, i really do want that HI DEF and GREAT SURROUND when i
record the habdful of current stuff.
my bose surround system is awesome.......you can hear the sound
effects in china when i watch surround sound effects
programming......... it would be a shame to stifle that system!!!
COMMENTS ??? RECOMMENDATION ????
