Rich-
I understand what you are saying about not revealing consignors... a
professional issue of confidentiality. But how about the horror cards and
posters that people have now that they might be suspect of? Again, these
would be consignments from the past where a question is raised about
authenticity of something that one is now the owner of that came from a
particular auction or dealer. It would be something that I now own that I need
some clarification of as to its authenticity. Would that be possible? If I
own a lobby card to say SON OF DRACULA and I suspect it might be a fake, do I
have the right to ask auction house "x" where I got it from where they got it
from and hope to have an honest answer? Its a different climate today and I
just wonder if this is something that is within a purchaser's right.

it's not possible to reveal the consignor in 99.9% of cases as if people knew
who the consignors were, why would you buy from the auction??
consignors may also want anonymity
Todd has it work to his benefit.. someone who buys that stuff and did not
know him will seek him out

I was thinking this afternoon about the whole issue of the Universal
Horror fakes and have been wondering about something. THE BLACK CAT 1 sheet
that Heritage has coming up for auction in November has the pedigree of being
from Todd F's collection and that, in and of itself, is better than any
so-called "expert" 3rd party opinion......at least in my book.
What I was wondering about is this........Is it ethically and
professionally possible for an auction house or dealer to reveal where and from
whom a card or poster came from to the current owner? Early on when this
scandal broke, I contacted an auction house about a card that I now own that
came from them. I asked the representative of the auction house that I spoke
to who had consigned the card. You would think that I had asked for the
classified secrets pertaining to national security. I was only told it was a
"reputable consignor".
Not being a dealer or auction house rep., I would imagine that there
is some kind of an understanding that the auction house has not in the past
given out this info. to buyers unless it is explicitly stated in the
description of the item (ie Todd's BLACK CAT). However, given the current
climate and the uneasiness of so many in the hobby, What about today in October
of 2009? I would really appreciate hearing the thoughts of dealers and
auction house reps.:
If I came to you and had purchased an item from you in the past that I had
my suspicions about, would you be able and/or willing to share that info. with
me? Again, I would not in any way expect that kind of client privilege to be
shared with just anyone who asked, but could you share it with the real current
owner of the piece in question who made the purchase from you?
Thanks for any info.
Steve
