Just began streaming RED RIVER from Netflix based on your glowing review. Having viewed IB Technicolor prints theatrically in the 1940s/early 50s until Technicolor Inc. sold all of the printers and dyes to China in the 1970s, and having owned more than few IB prints over the years, describing the Netflix RED RIVER colorization as looking "just like IB Tech", might be a bit of an exaggeration.
However, it is a significant improvement over the early colorized films and more than just a bit pleasing to the eye. I look forward to continued such technological improvements, though I will never see just cause to commit CITIZEN KANE, MURDER MY SWEET or OUT OF THE PAST to multi-colored hues, I would eagerly anticipate a superbly colorized YANKEE DOODLE DANDY (which should have been in Technicolor) and, finally a 3-D version of THEM, which was originally conceived to be shot in both with depth and color. Can't wait to one day stream the color 3D version! It may be a fad but this time it looks like the industry is more behind it. Especially for games. 3D TVs are here and of course will come down in price. Inevitably they will do a lot of this -- not that many films will benefit much from it and so it will probably be a fad that only last for a few years. Unless they make true "home theater 3d" affordable very quickly. If that happens, then watch for virtually every halfway popular movie from the last 20 years being issued in a 3D bluray edition. Perhaps more noticeable, I'm thinking virtually every movie now in production (or about ready to be released) will be hurriedly converted to fake-3D as ALICE IN WONDERLAND was, and marketed as "the ultimate 3D experience". This will last about 2 years, until all major feature productions switch over to concepting and filming in real 3D. So it's likely the next couple years will be a dust-up of lots of 3D hype coupled with a lot of disappointment -- pretty much like what happened every time they've pushed 3D in the past. But, this time I think the long-term results will be different, with true 3D production -- concepted from story board to final edit -- emerging as the default format for all films with any kind of real budget. -- JR Roland Lataille wrote: A number of films will be converted to 3-D and re-released. http://marketsaw.blogspot.com/2010/03/legend-3d-founder-barry-sandrew-phd.html -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Andy Neal <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Tue, March 9, 2010 9:02:03 AM Subject: Re: [MOPO] I saw Alice in Wonderland last night And as if by magic.... http://www.geek.com/articles/geek-culture/george-lucas-seriously-considering-star-wars-in-3d-20100120/ Someone got there before me with the idea, blast! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [MOPO] I saw Alice in Wonderland last night Date: Tue, 9 Mar 2010 13:56:17 +0000 I'm a big fan of IMAX/3D to be honest. It's all about the experience and feeling part of the movie. Avatar was absolutely amazing in 3D, In parts I almost felt I was in a video game. Theres only certain types of film which are good for 3D, Avatar being one of them. Alice in Wonderland wasn't that great for the 3D experince but still enjoyed the film. I certainly wouldn't watch It's a wondeful Life in 3D but would love to see Star Wars on IMAX for the experience alone. It's not for everyone though, apreciate that, some people even get motion sickness. Whatever floats your boat I say. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 9 Mar 2010 05:34:05 -0800 From: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MOPO] I saw Alice in Wonderland last night To: [email protected] Don't waste your money on Imax. No feature movies are filmed in Imax. You are just seeing a blown up version of a movie filmed in 35mm or digital. In fact if you saw Avatar (filmed with digital cameras) on a real large Imax screen (not the small fake Imax screen), it was window boxed with blank lines on all four sides of the screen. Imax is getting to be a joke just like the old 70mm Cinerama - not real 3-strip Cinerama. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Franc <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Tue, March 9, 2010 8:02:35 AM Subject: Re: [MOPO] I saw Alice in Wonderland last night Did you see the IMAX 3D version or the regular 3-D version? It wasn't as good as some people had told me, but it wasn't nearly as bad as some other people had suggested (another way of saying it was that it was no Edward Scissorhands, but it was also no Planet of the Apes). I am a huge fan of Johnny Depp, and yet I thought he was the least interesting part of the movie (although I was not as disappointed by him in this as I was by his performance in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). The weird thing they did with his eyes was distracting, and since you express a lot of emotion with your eyes, it hurt that way too. I thought the lead actress was quite good. If they wanted to make "The Gwynneth Paltrow Story", she would make an excellent choice to play the lead.
