The Killing is one of my all-time favorite movies, up there with Double
Indemnity and Sunset Boulevard.

What I especially love about it is the ensemble of character actors who really
bring these desperate low-lifes to...life. So many unforgettable scenes, but
all topped in my opinion by the wonderfully unhinged Tim Carey's scene in the
parking lot! There's nothing else like it in the movies.

Paths of Glory is also right up there with me (though behind The Killing
because it's a somewhat more conventional film). The extended shot showing
Douglas moving through the trenches is masterful. And until I saw this movie I
never really appreciated that Ralph Meeker could act! It's a shame he never got
another role that fit his talents like this one. And, of course, crazy Tim
Carey is in this movie, too, and he steals the execution scene.

As for Asphalt Jungle: another one of my top 10. Again, with the ensemble
acting. And, of course, Marilyn really IS in it! Not to mention, with her few
short scenes, she just about walks away with the movie. Also, for a die-hard
Lenny Bruce fan like me, what is REALLY cool is the scene where Sterling Hayden
leaves a pawn shop after buying a cheap suitcase and passes a nightclub in the
background with a sign reading "Live on Stage: Lenny Bruce." And this is when
Lenny was virtually a nobody emceeing strip clubs in LA and SF. Kubrick was
shooting on real locations, the sign just happened to be there because that was
where Lenny was working that week. Cool.

I think The Killing is a really underrated movie. Having spent considerable
time in Vegas surrounded by really low life people, I think the movie superbly
captures a wide array of really desperate people. I love the basic plot (and
its many twists) and the acting.

Still, The Asphalt Jungle is an even better movie! It is really a masterpiece
on so many levels, and I think The Killing's reputation has suffered because it
can't escape The Asphalt Jungle's shadow.

Don't get me started on Paths of Glory! It is a perfect movie on every level.
I only wish I could know exactly what master pulp author Jim Thompson
contributed to the script. I must have watched it 50 times, and it never gets
old.

Thanks Rich, having checked the emovieposter image archive:

Yep, 1 sht, think WC using same image good too.
The quad also uses that image, but it's even more overly lurid, (almost
psychedelic), than I remember.

    German is very nice indeed.

      I have the 1 sh & 3sh

I think the 1sh has a better, more displayable, colorful and striking
image
I think I recall the 6sh is also a sweet poster, but I haven't seen it in
a long time & don't remember the image

one thing I like about the 1sh is that you can see that very pose in teh
film as Kirk Douglas is ordering his men forward & going with them through the
tough battle

        Interesting face-off.

Think I'll re-watch both over Christmas, probably have a clearer
opinion about which I think is better quality then.
Love The Killing, more popular here, one of my favourite Kubrick films
and I've seen Paths of Glory far less.

Not least I imagine because the subject matter rightly makes Paths of
Glory a far less enjoyable experience.

And, while I really like it, was The Killing particularly original?
(The Asphalt Jungle springs to mind.)

Paths of Glory, has to be the more important film.

Banned in France, (I take no pleasure in that), and by Franco, which
        can't be a bad thing.

PS: I have paper on most of the Kubrick titles, but haven't felt
inclined with Paths of Glory, (BOMBSHELL!!!!!).

Any suggestions on nice art for that one appreciated.

yesterday Bruce had Kubrick - the Killing vs Paths of Glory

I'm shocked that Paths of Glory won this battle, especially by a
          2.5-1 ratio

I love both films, and Paths is a wonderful film, but I think that
the Killing is a far superior product, even though it is a bit more
          "raw" than Paths of Glory

Paths has some very stilted acting during some segments. Adolphe
Menjou in some and Wayne Morris in some others, which I don't think
          the Killing has at all.

what say the rest of you?
