When I was going to movies as a kid under 12 (I turned that in 1955), I went to the two first-run theatres in town and paid 25 cents for admission. At the second-run theate that played double features and had our Saturday kiddie matinee it was 10 cents for the movie, 10 cents for the popcorn and 5 cents for a coke. With the same 5 cents for bus fare each way, I could spend Saturday at the movies for a total of 35 cents!!! And believe me, those Roy Rogers and Jungle Jim movies were worth it!!!!! Along with the cartoon, the obligatory serial (everything from Rocket Man to Clyde Beatty), the occasional short, previews (loved 'em!) and even the newsreel. Were those better days at the movies???? Well, I think so. No stereo, special effects and still boisterous kids----- but NO flashing lights and silly ring-tones from the then unheard-of cell phones. But when CinemaScope came along, I became a grown-up moviegoer. Those were indeed the days! Joe B PS- The fresh-popped popcorn was sooooooo much better!! Just the smell could draw you in from a block away. Joe

I see a lot of people buying high priced snacks when we go to the movies. I guess if you can afford it, why not? The price of popcorn is not related to the percentage of the gate. They would charge $100 for a small popcorn if the audience would pay it. Certainly you don't believe that if the studios reduced their percentage, the theaters would charge less, do you?? Really?? They should make something on the ticket price and lower the cost of those concessions. I've heard exhibitors complain about it for years. The studios are greedy on this point. Of course, they have their "reasons" but the business model for movies is out of whack in my view. If families/individuals cannot afford the concessions they should stay away from them. How about the cost of the video games? When I go to the theaters I see those rooms filled to capacity with mostly school age students spending lots of money for a minute or two worth of play. Big bucket of popcorn and largest sodas usually include free refills. Certain nights there is unlimited popcorn for one price. > > From: Kirby McDaniel <[email protected]> > To: [email protected] > Sent: Wednesday, March 7, 2012 9:32 AM > Subject: Re: [MOPO] Man Sues over cost of Movie Snacks > > Who can defend $13.00 popcorn-packs?
