Hi John and Wim, when Christies London still had their bi-annual poster auction I used to buy from them quite frequently, but I ONLY bid when I was in London and able to pick the posters up in person. Even back in the 1990s, the shipping company they used had absolutely ridiculous rates.
I won quite a few non-poster items from an auction house in the Midwest earlier this year, that also works with a third party shipper. Eventually, I paid about $800 to the shipper, about $220 of this were the actual USPS shipping costs. $580 for two cardboard boxes, packing materials and maybe two hours time for the actual packing and handling still seems pretty ridiculous to me.
