Hi Filip and Helmut Christies in London used to refer their customers to Messrs Cadogen and Tate for shipping quotes when I last bid. Not sure if they still do that but the quotes I received were astronomical and that just put me off bidding at all. I know they have some high rollers who dont care too much about what they pay but they also rely on others who will not pay exhorbitant shipping charges. Regards John

Even back in the 1990s, the shipping company they used had absolutely ridiculous rates. I won quite a few non-poster items from an auction house in the Midwest earlier this year, that also works with a third party shipper. Eventually, I paid about $800 to the shipper, about $220 of this were the actual USPS shipping costs. $580 for two cardboard boxes, packing materials and maybe two hours time for the actual packing and handling still seems pretty ridiculous to me. Helmut Hi Wim I always thought that if a large auction house wants international bidders they should at least try and organise a decent shipping option for their customers. I used to buy quite a bit at auctions in London and usually was able to pick them up in person. However, on one occasion I had to have it sent and I couldnt believe the quote I received to send one poster to Australia. It meant that future bidding was just not possible because the cost of getting the item sent was so high. Its good that Heritage has their own shipping department and that is obviously a much better option than having to arrange postage through a third party. John, that is a real SOB to find out. Had the same experience with auctions in Canada and Italy. Actually I have the problem right now. Ecxellent communication until I asked for the shipping arrangements. Now they are also closed for the Season. Sure hope I don't have to pay for a fight, usually I have a 4" height advance over Italians.
