I have been on ebay since 1998 and have had two stores for many years. The bulk of my business is through my website but I have always felt that it is good to have ebay as a backup. There have been many changes to ebay over the years and they have often made life very difficult for sellers. One of the most incomprehensible changes happened when they decided to take a commission out of postage charges. Many sellers couldn’t believe that they could do this but they have continued with it for a long time and I still think it is morally reprehensible. In recent times, Paypal have made an equally unfair decision to keep fees when a seller has to refund a customer. So, if a seller has to send a refund to a customer because he thought he was buying a DVD instead of poster, Paypal do not refund their fees.
The latest “innovation” is ebay plus where sellers get higher visibility by providing Free Shipping, Express post and one day handling. Of course, many sellers have just increased their prices to absorb the free shipping. I don’t like the global shipping system and won’t buy anything that uses it. It means higher postage costs and longer delivery times and takes control from the seller so it doesn’t suit me at all. Shipping from Australia to the US has been greatly affected by Covid and there have been significant delays. I have found that buyers have been very understanding but one particular buyer lodged a case with ebay against me over a delay and I was pleasantly surprised that ebay were very understanding and sided in my favour. My sales on ebay have exceeded 7 figures over the years so despite all of the rule changes and glitches, I will continue to use them and try and adapt as best I can. Today, I received another message from them, informing me some adjustments will soon become ‚mandatoy‘ and others will be ‚optional‘. Their decision to introduce mandatory ‚automatic renewal‘ some time ago already pushed me to the edge and I thought about canceling my store subscription back then. Now they are at it AGAIN. Whatever their new rules might be, I don‘t even want to know. My yearly subscription would‘ve ended in three days anyway, and after that I would‘ve been stuck with them for another year. Not anymore. I just canceled my subscription, so on July 1, my ebay store will be history. I was still making a little bit of money, but not nearly enough to take up with yet ANOTHER set of new rules and regulations. On top of their ridiculous fees, that is. Also, in recent months, my quota of non-paying buyers has increased dramatically. That sellers are not allowed to leave appropriate feedback for deadbeat bidders is yet another thing that has bothered my since the day they introduced that policy. I‘m buying and selling on ebay since 1999, so I have watched pretty much all of their so-called ‚improvements‘ over more than two decades by now. So far, I could still convince myself to stick with them, but not anymore. Enough is enough.
