My feeling exactly. I can't see why they'd want the bother of all that
processing but maybe that's the justification for extra costs. I understand
their desire to chip a few more chunks of the total tally of each sold item but
my cynical assumption is they charge the taxes, keep them and then middleman
the package to the destination with avoidance of excise. But who knows?

Kirby,

Germany only charges an import tax for movie posters, but no custom duties.
Since I run a business, those import charges are fully refundable for me.

Yet, when you ship through ebay‘s GSP, I pay those duties to Pitney Bowes and
they are not refundable to me. For all I know, they simply vanish. In fact, I
have always wondered where that money is ending up. I very much doubt that the
German government ever sees any of it.

I don‘t know what legal loophole ebay and their partners have found here, but
the whole thing feels like a major scam to me.

We use the Ebay Global Shipping program, and it is very easy for sellers. Plus
my inventory travels insured, so everyone's money is protected. Plus I don't
have to fill out a lot of customs forms. Ebay Global Shipping is run by Pitney
Bowes for Ebay, and yes, it is more expensive. Yes, it takes some time. When
shipping internationally becomes easier, we will consider using the Post Office
here. Meanwhile, in the U.S. the Trump administration wants to abolish the
Post Office.
This is the TRUTH.

Secondly, almost all governments add duties to purchases of old movie posters.
Many buyers want to buy a poster for $150, and have ME tell the authorities
that they bought it for $20. These buyers may not know this, or appreciate it,
but this puts both the seller and the buyer at risk for significant fines.

It's dishonest, and I won't do it.

International buyers can buy from our own website, but insurance is limited.
Buyers may SAY that it OK for posters to travel entirely at their own risk, but
when
something actually gets lost, it's a different story.

Good for you!

I've had a couple recent transactions on ebay that have been awful. Mainly it's
due to the global shipping program, a great excuse for ebay to take a little
more out of buyer's and, I assume, seller's pockets. It's terrible and it takes
forever and the tracking is completely useless. The odd seller who still does
things the old way is wonderful to run across in these days when shipping is
almost a deal breaker, especially from the US to me in Canada. If shipping
continues to get even more ridiculous, I guess it will be a strictly US
thing...maybe that's their goal?

Anyway, always happy to see someone leave that site if they can.

All the best,
M

Subject: [MOPO] I just said good-bye to my ebay store

ebay has once again been pestering me lately, telling me I need to ‚adjust‘ my
store listings to once again ‚comply‘ with their ‚new rules‘.

Today, I received another message from them, informing me some adjustments will
soon become ‚mandatoy‘ and others will be ‚optional‘.

Their decision to introduce mandatory ‚automatic renewal‘ some time ago already
pushed me to the edge and I thought about canceling my store subscription back
then.

Now they are at it AGAIN. Whatever their new rules might be, I don‘t even want
to know. My yearly subscription would‘ve ended in three days anyway, and after
that I would‘ve been stuck with them for another year.

Not anymore. I just canceled my subscription, so on July 1, my ebay store will
be history.

I was still making a little bit of money, but not nearly enough to take up with
yet ANOTHER set of new rules and regulations. On top of their ridiculous fees,
that is.

Also, in recent months, my quota of non-paying buyers has increased
dramatically. That sellers are not allowed to leave appropriate feedback for
deadbeat bidders is yet another thing that has bothered my since the day they
introduced that policy.

I‘m buying and selling on ebay since 1999, so I have watched pretty much all of
their so-called ‚improvements‘ over more than two decades by now. So far, I
could still convince myself to stick with them, but not anymore. Enough is
enough.
