Rebecca's got the point in Steve's original question ... we're all real people, and the value in our interactions depends on our knowing that.
There's nothing "scientific" or "egotistical" about that. There's enough info on my blog for people to know who I am - and even a self-deprecating joke about "moronic vanity publishing" for the benefit of the Platt's of this world - so I don't need to post any summary here. When I blogged my first report of the 2005 conference - you will see that "meeting real people in the flesh" was my impression of the main benefit, of doing more than just corresponding electronically. In the absence of face-to-face / buy-you-a-beer sessions, asking for (and giving) the pen-picture "backstory" is a useful (but pale) substitute.
