Hi Ron, >Ron's quote continues: >"Scientific faith is based in the belief, or assumption, that >given enough time and careful consideration of the right questions, >there is no (physical) phenomenon in the universe that cannot be >understood." > > >Steve: >I have no such faith in science. Sam Harris also does not preach that >science will some day understand everything about the universe. He >says that people shouldn't claim to know things that they don't know >or encourage others to believe based on faith. He says that people >should hold all their beliefs to the same standards of reason and >evidence rather than making a special exclusion for beliefs espoused >by religions.
>Ron: >Every one should think one way, One interpretation, one true way. >This was the point I was making. Steve: I never said that everyone should think the same way. Evryone makes there own judgments of intellectual quality. I'm just saying that they should use their judgment of intellectual quality in considering the historical and cosmological claims made by religions as they would use on any other claims that they evaluate on a day to day basis. Everyone has there own standards. Faith is the dangerous idea that it is a good thing to believe certain kinds of things in disregard to your own standards. Ron: >Given what we know about MoQ, shouldn't Harris take his own advice >And not claim to know things that he doesn't know? Steve: What do you think I (or Harris) am saying I know that I really don't know?
