Hi Ron,

Ron:
>when you boil it down there is only a relative certainty about any
>observable phenomena. Science and religion make attempts at
>understanding reality. They both play the same role.
>Simplifying and projecting to grasp and relate, this is what we do.

Steve:
Religion tells us that our best understanding of reality is contained in a
magic book that hasn't been updated for almost 2000 years.

Equating religion with science in their attempts to understand the universe is
absurd. Religion already knows everything that it will ever know about reality.
Just read the magic book!

Ron:
>Nothing is objectively absolute. Understanding is subjective.
>True is what we "interpret" as congruent with observable phenomena.
>In other words we are not certain of anything. We develop
>interpretations, we ASSUME are true.

Steve:
We never need to assume anything is true in a faith kind of way. We can assume
for the sake of argument, we can make our best guess based on prior experience.

Ron:
>What I'm saying is no one really
>Knows a damn thing and Based on Sam Harris's statement maybe we should
>Just Shut up. Because we both don't "know" with absolute certainty
>A dagnabbed thing.

Steve:
Sam Harris says that we shouldn't claim to know what we don't know. Science
doesn't do that. It says, "this is our best theory at this point in time. New
evidence could mean we need to revise it or to scrap this theory completely."

Faith is protection from new evidence.

Regards,
Steve
