SA, Krim, now there's an example of a valuable constructive exchange ... I absolutely agree too with the "a set of levels" as a heuristic suggestion. My onion-skins comment many times before .... whatever levels you break this ontology down into, you will always find more layers within these layers. (My alternative expression is "everything comes in three layers, even layers".)
None of the layers are fundamental. But what is "fundamental" about them is that the vertical axis is evolutionary time, and the ontological medium is quality - dynamic processes and static patterns.
