All,

Speaking of Easter Island and "unintentional consequences" of social 
mining rather than gardening the biological level, I've been reading 
more about this "Great Pacific Garbage Patch" (The Pacific Gyre), and 
the growing amount of toxic plastic particles being "mistaken" as, or 
consumed with, plankton by smaller fish and birds, and the 
unintentional consequences this may have.

I'll tie this into my recent remark about the "rarity" of intelligent 
life in the cosmos by quoting Calvin & Hobbes. "Sometimes I think the 
surest sign that there is intelligent life out there in the universe, 
is that none of it has tried to contact us yet."
