Yes. That's a bit unfortunate but I hoped the rest would hint that it was used
in its most general meaning. Maybe "phenomenon", or some other word would suit
better?

could start with defining pattern first. Here's some
definitions of pattern from a dictionary:
A) give a regular or intelligible form
B) a regular and intelligible form or sequence
discernible in certain actions or situations
(Wikipedia) C) A pattern, from the French
patron, is a theme of reoccurring events or objects,
sometimes referred to as elements of a set. These
elements repeat in a predictable manner. It can be a
template or model which can be used to generate things
or parts of a thing, especially if the things that are
created have enough in common for the underlying
pattern to be inferred, in which case the things are
said to exhibit the unique pattern.
I thought Marsha asked for the MoQ meaning of pattern?

Not necessarily a 'thing', I
would say 'event', for me at least, is a better way of
putting this.
These eventful patterns are
named in the moq, they are called intellectual,
social, organic, and inorganic.
But if you say pattern=event, then the quality event becomes unintelligible. It
becomes "an event consisting of two events".
