dmb said to Ham: ...the MOQ is not "left without a metaphysical foundation" because of some oversight. Its a deliberate choice.
Ham replied: If he's deliberately chosen to posit a theory without a metaphysical foundation, we're all the worse for it, aren't we?. ..If DQ is meant to be only experience, then what he's expounded isn't metaphysics at all. ...I'm a free-thinking, self-educated philosopher without a curriculum vitae who finds a celebrated author's Metaphyics of Quality intentionally lacking a metaphysical foundation. Is my complaint justified? dmb says: I think not. Let me try a different analogy. Let's say the MOQ is an electric car. The whole point in driving an electric car would be to avoid using gasoline. But you're looking at the thing and complaining that there is no place to put the gasoline. That misses the point entirely. Such a complaint can only be based on a lack of comprehension about the thing you're looking at. As I understand the present state of academic philosophy, metaphysics is dead. The course I recently finished in the philosophy of religion, for example, concluded with contemporary readings from an anthology titled "Religion after Metaphysics". It included a wide spectrum of views but they all agreed that philosophy in general and religion in particular had to be re-thought entirely because of the death of metaphysics. And that's because traditionally religion IS metaphysics. The kind of metaphysics you seem to demand can't be found any more except in theological circles and even there it would be considered old-fashioned. Nietzsche announced the Death of God more than 100 years ago. I mean, intellectual fashions come and go but the death of metaphysics is like the end of the horse. You're trying to sell buggy whips in a world in transition to the electric car. Most will see it as being quite useless, if not absurdly obsolete. More literally, you're trying to sell essentialism to an anti-essentialist crowd. You're selling metaphysics in a post-metaphysical world. That's why nobody's buying it. _________________________________________________________________ Instantly invite friends from Facebook and other social networks to join you on Windows Live⢠Messenger. https://www.invite2messenger.net/im/?source=TXT_EML_WLH_InviteFriends Moq_Discuss mailing list Listinfo, Unsubscribing etc. http://lists.moqtalk.org/listinfo.cgi/moq_discuss-moqtalk.org Archives: http://lists.moqtalk.org/pipermail/moq_discuss-moqtalk.org/ http://moq.org.uk/pipermail/moq_discuss_archive/
