A woman experiences pregnancy. A man does NOT experience pregnancy.

I think in this context "to understand" meanings to find the commonality
between one's experience and the experience of another to the extent
possible. My wife and my daughter have experienced pregnancy but at least
from my view point, they all have somewhat different experiences. Certainly,
the insight they have into pregnancy has much more in common than I could
ever have with any of them in virtue of the fact that their experiences have
more overlap. But there are still big differences between their experiences.
Just as one Zuni experiences Zuni culture differently from other Zunis.
Understanding does not mean having identical experience it means finding as
much common ground or as much overlap as we can between different
experiences.
