[Arlo] I think the general conclusion you should come to :-) is that this forum is virtually MEANINGFUL! Indeed, "virtuality" or "reality" are problematic descriptors. Let's just say this forum is "meaningful" by virtue of the activity of those so involved. To be fair, it may lack meaning of any kind to those not interested in Pirsig's work. And for those people it most certainly is meaningless. To them, we are wasting our time talking about a half-baked philosophy when we should be doing something meaningful like further the philosophy of Kant or Aristotle or Person X. How would you counter that criticism? Wouldn't you say, "it's meaningful TO ME!" And what if they say, the rest of the world has declared Pirsig a hack, so why are you wasting your time? Wouldn't you say, "his philosophy has real value FOR ME?" And what if they say "shouldn't you be out organizing voting drives and improving social conditions or volunteering in a soup kitchen and working for the good of humanity rather than wasting hours reading and writing replies to an online forum each week?" What would you say to this? You see what I'm getting at? [Ron] this, the mad hatters tea party.. [Arlo] Aye.. but that describes the entirety of existence, Ron. Which is why we need to get an ale soon.
