Woods, you write:

"...what caught my eye was he was talking about
how uncreative the youth are in China. He would go to different regions
in China and go to different schools and meet different youth in
places and they were uncreative. He talked about these students of music
that could play amazing music but it was all instructional based music.
They couldn't make any music on their own.

Correct!

"....but the main theme in China is institutionalisation".

If by this you mean the systematic instruction in codes of behaviour and
correct modes of thinking (the type that does not endanger the development
"towards a scientific, harmonious, socialist society") then you are right.
And this starts at primary school, sitting in rows, 60-80 students /class,
told to shut up, teacher tells you what you need to know.(6-12 year
olds) Continued at middle school, another 6 years ( 6 and a half
days/week...they have Sunday off; and start again Sunday evening (from
7 'till 9:30) of being told to shut up unless the teacher asks you a
question (which is given in the textbook) and when you answer it had better
be the correct answer...very much along the lines in ZMM where the student
gets told that the teacher is not interested in what the student thinks but
what Aristotle thinks.

Again, in this way any attempt at self-expression are ruthlessly repressed.
Emphasis is on imitation and obedience.

Of course there are exceptions but overall you cannot blame these "youth"
for lacking 'creativity'.They are not given a chance. That's why I called it
a tragedy.

Woods, I can go on about this in perpetuity, cite other examples based on
direct experience but it will get boring after a while. And I'd rather focus
on MoQ issues...much more dynamic!
