Hello Mel

This has been a very lively discussion.
There is a book by Bernard Lewis called 'What went wrong", in regard to
the closing of minds to the west, especially when Europe went into its
renaissance period and the Arabs were left to reminess on the golden age
of Andalusia.
As for the closing of minds and hearts toward the west, two major events
led to that.
First, Operation Ajax that brought the shah back to power, eventually
leading to Khomeini. yes I know Iran is not an Arab country, but
nonetheless it's religious and political sphere of influence is obvious
in that part of the world.
Second, the closed minded ness of John Foster Dulles in refusing to help
Egypt finance the Aswan dam. Driving Nasser, Egypt, and a few other Arab
countries into the soviet camp. A not so smart move by the west in trying
to help budding cultures that were trying to embrace the west.
