Egypt was in response to Soviet actions, Iran was a favor for our friends
the British who wanted their oil on the cheap.

I keep wondering how much more cost effective it would be that instead of
military bases, we send water wells, small medical clinics and schools.
Despite all the resentments toward US policies, if you happen to need the
best medical attention you would go to the American university Hospital
in Beirut. That says a lot about where people are willing to put their
faith in their time of need.

After an earth quake in Pakistan a few years ago, many countries sent
medical aid. One was Cuba, financed by Venezuela. Because they had a lot
of female doctors, they were able to break through a lot of cultural
barriers in Pakistan.

and here is the wikipedia article. yes the US had the largest $$ payment,
but people tend to remember those who stuck around with a helping hand.
Remember Cuba has not killed one Pakistani civilian in any military
operation. that's what people remember and tend to base their love/hate
relationship.

Yes these articles are written as PR pieces, but they hold a lot of
truth. We have to learn a lot.
