Egypt was in response to Soviet actions, Iran was a favor for our friends the British who wanted their oil on the cheap. I keep wondering how much more cost effective it would be that instead of military bases, we send water wells, small medical clinics and schools. Despite all the resentments toward US policies, if you happen to need the best medical attention you would go to the American university Hospital in Beirut. That says a lot about where people are willing to put their faith in their time of need. After an earth quake in Pakistan a few years ago, many countries sent medical aid. One was Cuba, financed by Venezuela.
