Steve to MP: I think that one huge difference between the so-called religion of scientists and that of Christians is that scientists can always tell you exactly what sort of evidence would be inconsistent with their hypotheses, which can be revised based on new experience, while for religious people, there is no evidence that could ever be viewed as contrary to their faith in certain tenets.
MP: I don't know about that. I think both go about adjusting to contrary "evidence", they just do it in entirely different ways. Doubt is a major component of maintaining faith. how one deals with doubt in one's faith, in essence defines one's faith. Faith without doubt is either a rare enlightenment or a more commonly a blind faith. Andre: Hi Michael and Steve, I am reluctant to enter this conversation but the word 'faith' caught my eye. Michael, I have gone through this stuff 35 years ago...faith vs 'evidence' . I do not want anciennity to suggest any kind of advantage over new/young interpretations, as is the case in China, nor enthousiasms ( I am assuming you are younger than me) but, as you must agree, to posit the laying of dinosaur bones (as evidence of millions of years of evolution) as being placed there by God to test the strength of ones faith is absurd, stupid and dumb to me. I am not suggesting you are one of these adherents. And I think that this is what Steve is referring to: the scientist is willing to let go of 'fundamentals' based on evidence. The believer (in whatever) interprets the evidence either as non existent or as a test of faith...contrary to all the evidence and, unthinkingly, desparately holds on to these fundamentals (at any cost). I do not need Pirsig to back me up on this but I refer you to page 146 of ZMM. I will not insist any more. Quality you experience and is affirmed every minute of the moment. No faith required, constantly affirmed.
