In the deterministic world of science, chance is a measure of ignorance.
When a scientist doesn't know what causes a certain effect, like mind 
emerging from mud, the effect is attributed to chance, i.e, "I haven't the 
faintest idea, so don't ask." Similarly, what causes an electric lump of 
meat to enjoy a Rachmaninov concerto is beyond science's materialistic 
mentality. So is a conundrum like,  "The theory that all is matter and 
energy consists of neither matter nor energy." 

In the vernacular of the street,  "Science has a lot of 'splaining to do."
