Mind and Will are faculties of the soul which can create an intentional existence for ideas and decisions, in order to explain how I can know and want and what I am doing. SOM was created by the Greeks Socrates, Plato, Aristotle. Christian writers like Augustine, and Aquinas accepted a body/soul division. Thomas Aquinas in the Middle ages tried to delineate elements of SOM, for a Christian context. At the end of his life he wrote that what he had written was as straw. Not much food value for the individual. MOQ The metaphysics observed by Pirsig, eliminates the body/soul division. Intentional existence is denied and our ideas are experienced dq/sq. Evolution is the explanation for different orders of quality: inorganic, organic, social, intellectual. Esoteric literature dating back to Pythagoras observes a difference between order, and manifestation. My exposure to this literature are the modern writings of G. I. Gurdjieff, P. D. Ouspensky, Maurice Nicoll, Rodney Collins, John Bennett. Since Robert Pirgig¹s writings are a bit out of the mainstream SOM, I would put him in the esoteric class. Joe
