Marsha,
He probably hung out in bars off the reservation,, handouts perhaps,
drinking is frouned upon on most reservations.
I mean to say that he was static from the Zuni perspective,Like Dan's
example of the man who lived by the river, seperated from society, we
recognize him as a dynamic character, from the Zuni view he was sort
of a washed up relic of the old ways as most people in our own society
would view a street person.
I always have been kind of an oddball, because mostly I've seen that
what most people take as "real" always seemed fabricated, fake to
a degree. social construct.
I used to run with a local Brujo, Ray. A retired school teacher, divorced,
married for a short time in his youth, bi-sexual, a bard and brilliant writer.
He rarely bathed, drinking cheap vodka and unsweatened kool-aid from
a plastic jug he seldom washed, it had flakes and particles floating in it
but everytimed he offered me a drink, I accepted. When I knew him he
was in his sixties, did not work, collected cans to turn in to buy koolaid
vodka and popcorn which he subsisted mostly on., and an occasional
can of soup from the dented can store, he owned a delapedated old house
I'd come over and help mainatain for him, plumbing ceased to function years
ago.
I learned alot about life from Raym, born without a middle name. traveled
west with him in a beat up old ford truck for 400$ round trip,(gas mostly)
we slept along the road, got drunk and high, sang songs, wrote poetry
and taught me what it meant to truly be free while touring the natural wonders
of this country. He taught me an appreciation for classical music art and poetry
he introduced me to Mr. Pirsig and his Books and philosophy.
Society saw Ray as an old bum, people could not understand what I saw in him
I thought he was the most dynamic person I'd ever met.

-Ron

Greetings Ron,

What of the fact that the Brujo was collaborating with the
Whites?  That seems to me he was heading in a new direction.  I am
not challenging you, I am curious how you are experiencing this
episode.  What you have written below I have never considered, and it
seems it could be accurate.  Have you ever considered yourself an
oddball, meaning moving against the wind?  Was that just a matter of
being left behind or dancing to a different set of drums?  So what
was the situation for the Brujo?
