Will,

SA put me on to the Platform Sutra, then I went on to read the Diamond Sutra and then the Heart Sutra. This summer I reread them in the reverse order. Wonderful books!

By investigating ones own thoughts (conventional self) in meditation and mindfulness, one sees the no self, but I'm not a Buddhist. So the 'know thyself' statement was to discover the delusory nature of self. And I am quite sure that is how the Pythia of Delphi meant it.
