Mary you are partially right on that. The monotheist God is actually many
personality and gods all rolled up into one.
I just finished listening to the Bill Moyers series called genesis, in
which Moyers spend 10 separate hours discussion certain passages of the
Old Testament. Mainly the stories that had the most effect. The expulsion
from the Garden of Eden, Cain and Abel, Noah and the flood, Abraham and
his wife, mistress and 2 children, Jacob and Esau and Moses. All through
out the discussions it was interesting to see God's actions explained as
being the result of:
1. He is going through a learning process, like a child with building
blocks discovering the effects of gravity
2. A multi- personality schizophrenic. All the Greek and Roman gods good
and evil rolled into one. If nothing else he is Good and evil and the
same time, and we, his subjects have to appease both. So in a way, you
can say that the main monotheistic religion is actually polytheistic.

Time and time again throughout the discussions, so much was hinging on
the explanation of some Rabbinical scholar somewhere. So much was relying
on having a word translated right, and how much was lost in translation.
But most important of all was how much was left to the individual reader.
Quality in a way was being left to mirror the individual's view on life.
