dmb says:

Well I don't know how to distinguish that from solipsism or plain old
narcissism. I don't understand how you can relativism out of this stuff when
Pirsig is so plainly and explicitly saying that the Sophists were teaching
Quality and "not ethical relativism". Especially since he's saying that just as
the central quest of the whole book is finally resolved.

Ron chimes in again:
Well right, I see that as also coming to the conclusion that those sorts of
acusations are based
on a misunderstanding of equating truth relativism or cultural relativism with
Normative relativism. which is the whole point of Pirsigs realization you
quoted.
I think most of your arguement against Rorty is based apon such lumping
together.

Dmb:
But you are at a distinct advantage being a relativist because that means you
can't really be wrong about relativism or anything else. Must be nice. Maybe I
should convert and then I can just respond to objections by saying, "well, it's
true for me" or "it's true in my context". That'll be so much easier. Ah, I
feel relieved of a great burden already. Thanks Marsha.

Ron:
Is'nt this the point that Pragmatism brings into the spotlight? truth is
contextual? true it is a rhetorical
loophole, one Socrates was killed over cause it reduces any truth statement to
contextual agreementwhich tends to piss people off. What I mean to say is
having an understanding about how we make value judgements is different from
taking it as a legitimate philosphical school of thought which I'm not sure
it's quite fair to do. Unless of course, Marsha is indeed taking normative
relativism as her legitimate
philosphical school of thought, then you have a arguement. I think this
important to clarify to go
much further with the conversation.
