I almost completely  agree, Dave, it seems almost the definition of life of
any kind to value self over other, and how  could this preference be
expressed without a self-conception and how could there be a self-other
conception without subject/object awareness?

But for so much of life, plants, bacteria, worms, it's hard to picture how
any real self awareness could evolve and it's easy to postulate instinctual
responses  to environment.

Thus I put forth the mammalian divide as the flowering of self/other
consciousness and the beginnings of social patterning.

It's all about the 'mmmmm's baby.
