Greetings!

Recently, Charlie Rose interviewed a panel of physicists anticipating
results from the new Large Hadron Collider in Europe. The discussion
centered around their predictions of the experimental outcomes. Due to the
size of this accelerator, we will be able to observe particles previously
only theorized, and physicists predict that many new discoveries will be
made as a result. There was much spirited debate as to which theories will
be proven and which not, but one thing all agreed on was that the results
from this collider will not be sufficient to answer the fundamental
questions of the Universe. Many at the table believe there are particles
smaller still than those they hope to discover. Particles even more
fundamental, and that there may actually be no end to this. The smaller the
particles are that you can detect, the smaller the particles are that you
can detect - ad infinitum down the rabbit hole so to speak. These
physicists were basically predicting the failure of their own discipline to
be able to ever achieve the absolute answers it seeks.

In a previous post I made this statement. What muddies the water between
the Social Level and the Intellectual is the same thing that muddies it
between the Social and the Biological; namely that all three exist thanks to
Subject-Object Logic. It is the engine of change, or advancement, and I
would argue that no level beyond the Inorganic would exist without it. We
are immersed in it and we owe it a great debt, but is it right? Just
because it is fundamental to biological survival, does it follow that that's
the way the Universe really is?

The physicists were undeterred. Though willing to admit the inadequacy of
their area of science to achieve a fundamental understanding of the nature
of the Universe, they could not offer another alternative to reaching that
understanding. The science is good, the results valid and verifiable, and
many useful and interesting things are learned from it; yet following that
subject-object path to infinity will not result in ultimate answers - and
even they are aware of that.

We are all immersed in SOM and so believe it to be all there is. But we are
approaching the point in particle physics where SOM interpretations of the
nature of the Universe are failing to provide the answers we seek. Instead
of reassessing the validity of the SOM model, however, we are doggedly
pursuing funding for ever bigger and more highly energetic accelerators in
hopes of finding particles even more fundamental than those already
discovered.

We do not really believe that the Universe is made of Quality. We pay lip
service to this idea while continuing to build particle accelerators in our
backyard. This is because SOM is in our DNA. SOM (or more precisely SOL)
is the engine for the Biological, Social, and Intellectual Levels. The
Intellectual Level is separated from the Social only by the nature of that
which it values. It is all SOL all the way down and we will be unable to
understand the answers we seek, or even know the right questions to ask,
until "the SOM/SOL veil is lifted from our eyes" as they say.

I am hopeful and optimistic. You cannot change someone's belief system
until they are satisfied that that belief system is incorrect. For that
reason, I strongly encourage the building of ever larger particle
accelerators.

Mary
