[Arlo] The thing Pirsig wanted us to see was that even though the dominant intellectual pattern of the Western world was SOM, it doesn't have to be that way forever. There is something better. And Pirsig crafted two high quality books proposing a "root expansion" of rationality. [Mary] It is acceptance of Quality (Morals with a big M) as the Primary Reality rather than Subs and Obs. [Arlo] Yes, this is the root expansion here. SOM (the dominant intellectual pattern), which is a metaphysical position that derives from the belief that subject/objects constitute the primary division of "reality", was challenged by his MOQ (another intellectual pattern), which is a metaphysical position derived from the belief that dynamic/static constitutes the primary division of "reality". [Mary] The Intellectual Level can't deal with that and does not accept it, but that doesn't make the Intellectual Level 'bad'. [Arlo] The SOM-dominant pattern can't deal with that and does not accept it, but that doesn't make the Intellectual level 'bad', no, and this is why Pirsig's expended effort to offer a better intellectual pattern, an expansion of rationality. [Mary] Can't be bad. It's the highest Static Quality. It's just that there are better Static Qualities to be had than that. [Arlo] There are better intellectual static qualities to be had, for sure, and the MOQ is one. Of course, the intellectual level is not "bad", nor is it broken, nor cancerous, nor evil, nor the root of all evil. The SOM patterns, Pirsig identified, had led to a blindspot for those accepting that pattern as their orientating vision. Pirsig tried to correct that blindspot.
