Ham said to dmb:
...Why do you suppose "this notion contradicts the fundamental assumption of
every philosophical school"? You admit that the point of radical empiricism is
precisely "to contradict that fundamental assumption." But what justifies the
dismissal of sound philosophical, psychological, and sociological research,
except the need to postulate a monistic reality?
dmb says:
Well, that's exactly it. If you want to understand what Pirsig is saying, then
you need to figure out what justifies the dismissal of that fundamental
assumption. Then you would see what the problem is. You can understand the
solution (the MOQ) only if and when you see what the problem is (SOM). Only
then will you be in a position to dispute, criticize or offer alternatives to
the MOQ. As it stands now, however, your comments and complaints are quite
meaningless because they're simply irrelevant to the actual content of Pirsig's
work.
