Dan:
Well, I was thinking more along the lines of an automatic response,
kind of like shaking someone's hand when it is extended. Or, I have on
occasion driven somewhere and upon arriving, I have no notion of
actually driving there. It was like I was on autopilot. Or maybe even
cooking my favorite soup recipe... I just know whart ingredients go
into the soup without any real thought.

I understand what you're saying... perhaps if we look at it this
way... if I think: should I say Bless You, then it is an intellectual
pattern. If I just say it, it is a social pattern. But most times the
two are so intertwined that it is quite complicated to separate.
