"Self-evident" points to a preconscious assumption, thus invisible. It's an
assumption accepted without thought, without question. For example, it is
self-evident to science that an order exists in the universe to be
discovered. Similarly, it is self-evident to Western thinking that the
primary division of experience is subjects/objects, mind/matter,
mental/physical, etc., i.e. SOM. that in Pirsig's static value hierarchy
infuses the intellectual level.
