Joe to Andre and all: The way I see evolution is order in existence. I see morality as appealing to order in existence for its foundation. For morality Evolution matters.
Andre: Hey Joe, not sure what you mean by 'order' in a MOQ sense. Is evolution 'order'? Phaedrus suggested that:"It seems clear that no mechanistic pattern exists toward which life is heading...". To me a 'mechanistic pattern' is 'order'. It is neat and there are no surprises. But the MOQ suggests that life is heading away from that. If, for you the foundation of morality is contingent upon 'order in existence' then we are getting into an interesting area. "...has the question been taken up of whether life is heading away from mechanistic patterns? What does 'order' mean in an MOQ sense? Perhaps we can distinguish between 'order' and 'harmony'. I would put the former in the SOM camp and the latter in the MOQ camp.(I am suggesting this for historical reasons...mainly inspired by the Absolutists) Even though both point towards Quality the former seems to me to be of a different order ( SOM conventionally forcing things into 'order') whilst the latter appears more 'artistically' inspired. Putting it differently, it seems that 'order' is more 'intellectual' whilst 'harmony' is achieved pre-intellectually...it seems to just happen and you can only appreciate it and analyze it afterwards... after the event has taken place. Then you can 'harmonize' your own pre-ordered conceptions which lead one to further growth and understanding. Not sure therefore what you mean by: "For morality Evolution matters". The intellectual pattern of value named 'evolution' allows us to make sense, to understand, to clarify moral events by placing them in their evolutionary context, all of which are occurring now. LILA is about this. I think 'Evolution' is not something that is of any matter to morality. It just keeps on doing its thing as it has done well before 'we' even appeared on this planet to talk about it and discuss it. Does this make sense Joe?
