Hey Joe,

I'm never sure if I catch the drift of your thought. (Ron said that my
writing requires subtle reading, but I think you might be hands down
most compact conceptually.) However, perhaps "recognize" is just
the word you're looking for. Your formulation was this: "I know the
indefinable and it gives me a sense of direction if I acknowledge the
direction to which it is pointing." What I didn't object to was "know,"
but I feel as queer about that as "acknowledge." But if your aim is to
balance to different kinds of value, perhaps your effort at going in
two different directions at once is better served within the bounds of
the entire sentence, and not a single word. For example, "I know"
gives a sense of precision and certainty to the _what_ it is that one
knows, the content. But it's "indefinable," and that, I think, should
cause us some qualm in our _application_ of this knowledge. So
the gift of this knowledge we receive from the indefinable that "gives
me a sense of direction" gets the conditional "if" of "re-cognition" in
our action of applying the knowledge of direction to going in that
direction. This articulates a sense in which we are precise and
certain of our knowledge of the indefinable in the moments of
original apprehension/cognition, while at the same articulating the
slippage between cognition and re-cognition: i.e., DQ and the wake
left behind in static patterns. (And if anyone feels weird about
"cognition" standing in as DQ, I think one can make the same point
be restructuring the formulation to pre-cognition/re-cognition. In
this formulation, our experience is a dialectic between the two,
and there is no such thing as "cognition" without a prefix, unless it
stands in for the balanced, harmonious life with both that Pirsig aims
for.)

Matt

Hi Matt,

IMHO in a DQ/SQ form of metaphysics I face two problems: EVOLUTION and the
MANIFESTATION of levels in existence. Pirsig describes a metaphysical DQ/SQ
as order.

I used the word "acknowledge" instead of "recognize" to emphasize that two
values "order" and "manifestation" are formulated differently. ORDER
follows an evolutionary paradigm of x levels. MANIFESTAION follows a
different paradigm of active, passive or neutral activity. In any case
"acknowledge" is a throw-away word, and I did not know a word for being
precise in the two directions at once, and I am open to suggestions like
"conundrum".
