Hi Marsha, In my opinion, Plato was all about posterity. Socrates, on the other hand, was not. This is why he did not write. I often wonder if Plato is presenting Socrates faithfully. Much of Plato's dialogues have an agenda which I do not think that Socrates could have believed in. I like the old Greek tragedies. They are much more alive than Plato's dogma.
Yes, again in my opinion, words are markers that the brain uses for social memory purposes. While feelings (thoughts before reification) can also be recalled, we have developed a very complex way of relating our personal awareness. In order to simplify and compartmentalize a particular notion, we have a word based filing cabinet. The papers in such a filing cabinet are useful tools.
