Hi Paul, rats, lousy timing. Didn't really have time to follow that last 5 days thread in real time, following the spat with Dan, so just managed to digest it in the last hour (having spent recent days reading Boscovich and Mach).
The appearance / reality distinction is at the heart of misunderstood attitudes - or maybe attitudes to misunderstanding - here. When some of us (Marsha is the archetype) says "but X is only a mirage" (all is appearance, all is analogy, etc) it's not "dismissing" the Context 1 comprising all those objectified patterns, just a reminder that we all recognise it is secondary to the Context 2 of radically experienced quality. Again, when we say that the underlying reality is "for the birds" because we never have direct knowledge of it, it's not to deny its existence, again just to remind ourselves we "really" experience Context 2 from which (highly valuable, but illusory, metaphorical) patterns of Context 1 are constructed and used and may be re-constructed as our models for that underlying reality - and what works - evolve. These "reminders" ensure we never lose sight of the "relations" between these contexts. Welcome back any time.
