Hi David,

Exactly. Thank you.
The MOQ says that intellectual values are as real as rocks and trees. And these
values are placed at the top of the moral hierarchy precisely because they are
more dynamic, more open to change, than are the other categories of static
values.

I agree with most of this, but one part of your statement strikes something I've been chewing on for some time: What do you mean by "more dynamic" and "more open to change"? I would immediately subscribe to "more moral", "on a higher evolutionary level", but your statement reads to me also as "more fragile", "less static", which I feel would weaken the "as real as rocks" assertion. Did I understand you right there? Can you recall a Pirsig quote to support this?

In thinking about this, I started writing down some examples for possible changes of static patterns of values (SPoVs), and I would highly appreciate any AC/DC (Additions, Corrections, Discussions or clarifications) from the group:

1) inorganic SPoVs can be changed by
a) inorganic SPoVs (a rock breaks apart due to freezing water, gravity, electricity) b) biological SPoVs (my muscle tissue works hard to break a peace of wood)

2) biological SPoVs can be changed by
a) inorganic SPoVs (suffocating in empty space, being struck by lightning)
  b) biological SPoVs (squashing a bug, begetting a child)
  c) social SPoVs (restraining the desire to fart, death penalty)

3) social SPoVs can be changed by
  a) biological SPoVs (adultery, extinction of a tribe/culture)
b) social SPoVs (police imprisons gang members, company moves/expands to other country) c) intellectual SPoVs (the equal rights idea results in a law against discrimination, the idea of Open Access pushes scientific publishers into bankruptcy)

4) intellectual SPoVs can be changed by
  a) social SPoVs (Nazi book burning, church enforces Galileo's recant)
b) intellectual SPoVs (the idea of privacy/personality rights changes the perception of the idea of total transparency - is this really a change, or only a conflict, and the ideas remain the same?)

5) all SPoVs can be changed by DQ (examples anyone?)

Thanks,
Timo
