[Mark] Life utilises energy as it undergoes entropy yet increased in order and complexity.
Further than this, social patterns, which increase in complexity further than biological patterns cannot be described in entropic terms. [Case] Life does not use entropy. It uses energy waylaying it, and transforming it as it moves toward dissipation. Mark 01a-02-07: Casey Case! Hope for the best, expect the worst, and take what comes ey? I see we're still on this entropy kick, as you American folks will insist upon having it. I thought by now it was, 'in back of view?' I shall regret it, i know i will. But the task must be brought to a fruitful conclusion. 1. Entropy is a law like measure of inorganic matters' tendancy* to disorder. 2. The moq claims biological life is not reducible to inorganic matter. 3. The moq further claims that biological life resists inorganic laws. 4. Therefore, biological life does not obey entropy. * Tendency, because quantum indeterminism does not rule out extremely improbable reverses of this law. Now, i said, if you will attend, that, "Life (biological patterns) utilises energy as it (inorganic patterns) undergoes entropy..." Note: It is the energy (inorganic pattern) which is dissipating (increasing in entropy) not life. If energy may be said to be evolving, then it is evolving into structured states which resist entropy. But that's what life is, (thanks to Carbon chemistry) and it's what distinguishes it from the inorganic. Mark 01-02-07: Please demonstrate that all values obey chaos theory and i shall agree with you. This will then be the end of the moq as we know it. [Case] I can not resist noting that none of this causes problem for the MoQ as I know it. Mark 01a-02-07: Resistance is futile. Mark 01-02-07: Fair enough but i need to see how this applies to social and intellectual patterns. [Case] Once you grant that the earth is an open system, thermodynamically speaking, then all of the problems go away. It is no longer a question of entropy but a question of how the influx of energy is dispersed. For social patterns it is a matter of how the society is able to find and exploit energy source. Mark 01a-02-07: A whirlpool is an Inorganic open system retaining structural integrity as energy flows toward increasing entropy. Some of that energy is latent maintenance. In other words, the structure of the whirlpool surfs in the flow of energy. If you examine the degree of intricacy of inorganic open systems you observe them to be fleeting structures at best, or Planet sized Jupiter like Red spots at worst. The case may be different with regard to biological life? In this case, the fidelity of the transmitted structure is: 1. Exceptionally intricate (think of your own body) 2. Becoming increasingly intricate through millions of years of evolution. Is the Red spot evolving? Does a whirlpool evolve and transmit its structure with high fidelity? No. Only Carbon based biological life can do this, as far as we know. I grant that computer software may be able to do a similar thing. Case: If we set the wayback machine to visit Great great... Granddaddy Uga we find him busy with his invention of fire. He figured out a way to take the sunlight trapped inside fallen tree branches and convert it to heat. This allowed him to cook his food and warm his children. The food he uses to convert the suns energy stored in small game to his own bodily energy. He makes children to keep the ball rolling. Mark 01a-02-07: What you are saying is this: The whole biological repertoire, from its inception to now, may be considered to be one whole dissipative system. Further, it is a continuation of the inorganic repertoire which existed prior to the inception of the biological repertoire. In other words, it's all one huge whirlpool, to be a bit analogous. Congratulations Case, you've just demolished the moq. I hope you are pleased with yourself? But wait on old chum. Does the moq have a come back? I rather think it does. Compare a Lion to the most sophisticated Inorganic dissipative system? Are you seriously going to insist these are on a par? "They are the same," you ejaculate, "you just said so." Not so, what you have explored are the conditions for describing and categorising the inorganic from the biological: The biological is better. That is to say, it has more value; it is more moral. The inorganic can generate dissipative systems of a very low order. Biological systems are so far above these in scope, sophistication and value they may be regarded in new descriptions and awarded a category of their own. For if you don't, one possible consequence is that all inorganic and biological patterns are one dissipative system: You have no more value than a piece of shit (atoms are dissipative systems too and shit is made of atoms, which is no shit). Now, i know there may be some people who actually believe this to be true regardless of the moq, but i will defend you against this vial and demeaning charge with great vigour. Case: The sophistication of a society is measured by its ability to use energy. Agriculture allows the trapping and storing of sunlight in food to be more predictable and readily available. The result is the society can support more people. The wheel allows horse power to be used more efficiently. Water wheels convert the flow of water into work. Use of fossil fuels allows energy stored many years ago to be converted into energy to power cars, electric plants and foreign wars. Mark 01a-02-07: My argument is augmented with the social: American Society is on a par with a piece of shit. Now, i know there may be some people who actually believe this to be true regardless of the moq. Case: As societies evolve the ability to use energy, they are better able to support intellectuals in the manner to which they have grown accustomed. Mark 01a-02-07: The conclusion here is the moq is a dissipative system on a par with a piece of shit. In short the transformation of energy into biological processes and into work is all about the many ways that sunbeams get released from bondage. The study of the flows and paths energy takes is thermodynamics. All of this is possible because the sun provides more energy than all of us can possibly use at the moment. It is this inflow of energy that makes this planet such a Dynamic place. But entropy is never overcome it is simply overwhelmed. Mark 01a-02-07: This has to be one of the most nihilistic statements i've ever read. May i suggest Kierkegaard or Sartre? If you don't really go in for God avoid Kierkegaard.
