In Lila, Pirsig discusses Dharma. Rituals that
are quality. Rituals are deadening static patterns
and dynamic quality is the center of these rituals.
The Vedas might be static patterns deadened by
practitioners devoted upon a path, that their path of
devotion, and by devotion I mean strong effort, these
practitioners deadened static patterns and just did
certain activities over and over again. These
habitual practices would make the practices
unconscious. So, what does the practitioner become
conscious of, hmmm. Well, while I practice sitting
being alert is my devotion due to how what I can be
alert of, if I stick with these 'things' I can be
alert about, well then, I've become distracted. I
hear a bird sing, and then the bird leaves. For me to
stay stuck upon these events is to become distracted
and not be present in the now. If I'm not alert to
what is currently happening, then I have not deadened
these static patterns that have left and flown away.
I've remained locked upon the unconscious world of
gained knowledge. Taking your word for it that the
Vedas 'wait around to rescue people', would this be
the same as, the Vedas discuss 'that which happens
presently while we are alert and attentive'. Thus,
the Vedas are discussing first-hand experience of what
we may experience now. This experience we may live
now is one that may last for centuries, thus written,
these writings wouldn't be saying anything different
for a long time. For instance, the spring leaves are
small still. That moment in spring has occurred for
millions of years, and yet, I can presently experience
that moment right now freshened by winters passing.
This is how I view Pirsig's mentioning of Dharma
and deadening of static patterns. It is an effort
that happens in the now, and thus, the presence of dq,
first-hand experience, is the present living state of
the world.
