Micah, This idea of freedom to choose seems really, really important to you. Like it must be absolute and inviolate. But what choices do you Micah really have? Did you choose to be born? Did you choose the circumstance of your birth? The society you grew up in? Your native tongue? Did you choose to come into the world addicted to oxygen? Did you choose to desire to consume other living things? Will you choose the moment of your death?
Our choices are constrained by lots of things. Biology is just one of them. Krimel, The reason people with social quality do not have to wake up and decide to play nice is that our ancestors made the choice for them. "Nice" is a social quality. People of intellectual quality don't do certain things for reasons of their own, not the reasons of others. That is intellectual quality. Your self is your choice, and it may not be an easy choice, but doing things by nature (abdication of choice) is biological quality, doing things by convention (the choice of others) is social quality, and doing things by your own reasoned choice is intellectual quality because it involves the intellect in the construction of the self. Build your own box. Micah [Micah] So, of course people wake up and decide whether to do mayhem or not, that would be intellectual quality. Internal morals, not external morals. And I realize that we are the exception to the social rule. [Krimel] The reason people do not have to wake up and decide to play nice is that our ancestors made the choice for us. There are certain behaviors that we just don't do, not because of social controls or even learning. They just are not in our nature to do. moq_discuss mailing list Listinfo, Unsubscribing etc. http://lists.moqtalk.org/listinfo.cgi/moq_discuss-moqtalk.org Archives: http://lists.moqtalk.org/pipermail/moq_discuss-moqtalk.org/ http://moq.org.uk/pipermail/moq_discuss_archive/ moq_discuss mailing list Listinfo, Unsubscribing etc. http://lists.moqtalk.org/listinfo.cgi/moq_discuss-moqtalk.org Archives: http://lists.moqtalk.org/pipermail/moq_discuss-moqtalk.org/ http://moq.org.uk/pipermail/moq_discuss_archive/
